11/7/2005  2nd Annual Global Health Symposium: Global Health and the Millennium Development Goals, December 7, 2005, 5:00 to 8:00pm, HSLC 1325

Overview of the Program

In December 2005, the Global Health Program at UW-Madison will sponsor its second annual symposium featuring the global health efforts of UW faculty, staff, students and health professionals from the greater Madison area. The purpose of the 2005 meeting is to raise awareness about the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and to allow participants to share information about ongoing UW and Wisconsin-based global health activities.

Keynote Speaker Dr. Frances R. Westley, Director of the Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, will share her perspectives on the critical role of health in the multi-sectoral MDG effort.  Expert discussants will then be invited to comment.  After the keynote lecture, the group will break into concurrent sessions in which participants will share their experiences from around the world in 10 minute presentations.  The symposium will be followed by a reception for all.  This event is co-sponsored by the Global Health Program and the student-led Global Health Interest Group.

More about the Millennium Development Goals

The Millennium Development Goals were adopted at the UN’s Millennium Summit in 2000.  Achieving them by 2015 will reduce by half the number of people living in poverty and will enhance and transform the lives of many of the world’s people. The goals were formulated based on years of development work and build on insight and consensus developed through a series of international conferences held in the 1990’s on the environment, human rights, and social development.  The millennium development goals are to:

  1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.
  2. Achieve universal primary education.
  3. Promote gender equality and empower women.
  4. Reduce child mortality.
  5. Improve maternal health.
  6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases.
  7. Ensure environmental sustainability.
  8. Develop a global partnership for development.
